My radiator is cold - help!

There are many common problems with radiators, which can often be resolved at home on your own without the need for a professional. However, if your radiator is proving to be hot or cold at the bottom, you may have a bigger issue on your hands.

Check for air within the system

If one or more radiators are cold towards the top, it may be there is air within the system. Built up air can prevent hot water circulating properly, therefore reducing the amount of heat released through your radiators. If you have a radiator key, bleeding radiators is a way to resolve this issue easily – for more information on how to bleed a radiator, check out our help guide here.

If you have checked for air within the system and bled the radiators (released excess air), but the radiators are still cold, check where the cold patch is.

The radiators are cold at the bottom

It could be the hot water within your central heating system isn’t circulating the full way through the radiators, especially towards the bottom half of the radiators. If this is the case, you could have a bigger issue on your hands which will require the assistance of a professional.

Magnetite and sludge are common build ups within heating systems, which can prevent hot water flowing as it should. This thick layer of sludge builds up and can:

  • Prevent your heating system working

  • Reduce the life span of your system

  • Cause a breakdown within the system

The good news, however, is the system can be chemically flushed to remove the build up and ensure your system continues to run at its full potential. You can also take additional precautions to prevent a build up within the future.

Flushing the system

50five’s expert team of engineers understand all there is to know about chemically flushing central heating systems. Whenever we carry out a boiler replacement, or conduct a boiler service, we always recommend installing a specialist filtration system, designed to keep magnetite and sludge build up at bay.

Working in partnership with Adey Innovation Ltd, 50five are certified to install state-of-the-art filtration systems – the Adey MagnaClean Professional 3. Following a chemical flush of your system, removing any build-up of sludge, magnetite and other debris, the MagnaClean system works to filter any debris away from your system to maximise heating efficiency and reducing the likelihood of a system failure.

The new Professional 3 is in fact a smart device – Wi-Fi enabled to alert you of any potential issues, and alert 50five as installers when the filter is full, in need of a service, or if there is an issue with the full system. The filter itself is also fitted with an LED light indicator, so you can view the level of magnetite capture.

Watch the below video to find out more about the Adey MagnaClean Professional 3:

It is always worthwhile to ensure your central heating system is annually serviced, to ensure the system is working to its full potential, there are no underlying issues and just for peace of mind – there is nothing worse than finding your system has stopped working.
