Security Cameras: What You Need To Know Before You Buy!

Last updated: 6 months ago

What should you pay attention to when buying a smart security camera? 50five explains it for you!

At 50five, we know how difficult it is to make big decisions, that’s why we do the research to help you make informed decisions! Recently we looked at the differences between a range of smart lighting systems. In this article, we explain to you exactly what you need to pay attention to when buying a smart security camera.

Brand

Maybe you have a preferred brand, or already have several smart appliances from that brand in your house. If so, those devices can be programmed to work together with your smart security camera. An example of this would be if you already have a Nest thermostat or Nest Protect Smoke, and add a Nest camera to your existing devices. To give you a real-life example of this, you could set your camera to turn on as soon as smoke is detected; you would then immediately see if there is actually a fire or someone in the house has something burned.

Storage

Another important point when choosing a suitable camera is the storage options and capacity. There are cameras that store everything in the cloud (such as the Somfy Protect One or Ring Spotlight) and some that require you to pay a subscription for their cloud service, like Ring, or Somfy who let you look back 24 hours for free – but require you to pay after this.

If you would prefer not to have storage your data in the cloud, there are also cameras can store the images on an SD card. Examples of these are the Nest Indoor and the Netatmo Welcome - the latter also has both storage options!

Indoor or outdoor?

What you must pay attention to when buying a security camera is where you want to place the camera. Are you looking for an outdoor security camera or do you prefer to keep an eye on the living room? Both have their pros and cons again. An outdoor camera sees intruders before they come in and can withstand a heavy rain shower. However, you do need a good Wi-Fi range to allow an outdoor camera to run properly in the garden.

An indoor camera can only be placed indoors, but can also be used as a baby monitor and is less likely to suffer from connection problems. So, think carefully about your needs before purchasing a security camera!

Additional functions

You may already have an idea about what kind of security camera you want, but we have not mentioned the extra functions yet. For example, some cameras have a built-in microphone and speaker, so you can talk to the dog that is alone at home. You can also shout that the intruder has ten seconds to leave your house and the police are on their way.

Other cameras, such as the Ring Floodlight and the Netatmo Presence, have large outdoor lamps that start with movement, that will certainly deter an unwanted visitor! Some security cameras have face recognition, so you can see who came home so late. Whilst others offer a built-in siren that will definitely scare off any burglars?
