IFTTT stands for "if this, then that". Learn more about the free platform that connects all of your smart devices.
So much of today’s new technology is “smart” – lighting, TV, home security, and even home appliances. The Internet of Things is expanding rapidly and will continue to do so. However, while smart devices connect to your smartphone, they don’t always connect to each other. That’s where IFTTT comes in.
What is IFTTT?
IFTTT stands for “If this then that” – a concept inspired by programming, where a given action or input triggers a secondary action. In short, it’s a way to connect and automate your smart devices. The IFTTT app and web app let you create custom applets (previously called “recipes”) that trigger automatic events based on certain criteria.
How does IFTTT work?
IFTTT follows a simple formula: if x happens, then y is triggered. For example, if you leave home, then your Philips Hue lights turn off. If your Nest Cam detects that someone is home, then your Honeywell Evohome sets the temperature to 21°.
You’re not limited to smart devices, though. IFTTT also lets you perform automated actions all over the web. If the forecast shows rain, then receive a reminder to bring an umbrella. If you “like” a music video on YouTube, then it adds the song to a Spotify playlist. If you can imagine it, IFTTT can automate it.
How do I use IFTTT?
First, download the IFTTT app for Android or iOS, or visit the website: www.ifttt.com.
You need to create an account to use IFTTT. You can sign up with your email address or an existing Google or Facebook account.
IFTTT works with a huge number of apps and platforms that you already use, like Android, Google Assistant, Android Wear, iOS, Amazon Alexa, and more.
Using an applet is simple. From the IFTTT app or website, sign in and select “My Applets” to see a list of all applets that are currently turned on. To find or create a new applet, select “Services”.
Browse the list of services or start typing to find a specific service.
Selecting a service will show you a list of the most popular applets. Select the applet you want to activate.
Select “Turn on” to activate and customise your applet. You’ll be asked to grant permission for IFTTT to connect to the relevant services.
From here, you’re presented with a number of options to customise your applet, including whether to be notified when the applet runs. Set your preferences and hit “save”. Your applet is now running!
Creating an applet
If you don't see the applet you want, no need to fear! Creating your own applet is simple and intuitive. Simply go to "my applets" and select "new applet". IFTTT will guide you to add your services and actions.
