Smart thermostats provide households with a smarter and more efficient way to heat a home.

Unlike traditional thermostats, households can more effectively regulate temperatures throughout different rooms, save on energy costs and begin to save money on energy bills.

With most boiler installations carried out by 50five, our engineers install a new smart thermostat. Our certified engineers walk customers through the setup and daily running of our wide range of smart thermostats, enabling customers to improve their energy efficiency right away.

What are the advantages of a smart thermostat?

  • Functions independently - smart thermostats can function without having to set time schedules or the temperature. Some smart thermostats use a motion sensor to determine if anyone is home, while others are self-learning. Self-learning thermostats ‘learn’ patterns within households to determine when a home should be heated.
  • Home/away assist - most smart thermostats can detect when you are travelling home and turn on your heating before you even arrive. Using geo-fencing, the device detects when to activate the heating based on your location.
  • Multi-zone heating - this feature enables households to heat several rooms, totally independent from one another. For example, make your bedroom warmer than your bathroom. With 50five, multi-zone solutions can be installed – contact us for smart advice on the best thermostat for you.
  • Single zone heating - most smart thermostats operate a single zone. The smart thermostat switches all open radiators on and off when necessary, until the desired temperature is reached.

When looking for a smart thermostat, it is important to consider what type of boiler is in your household.

An On/Off boiler switches on if a room is too cold and will switch off when the room is up to temperature. An OpenTherm boiler adjusts flame and water temperature to the heat demand – gradually regulating heat.

It is also important to consider if you have irregular working or home patterns. If your household works on irregular patterns, a thermostat with a geo-fencing function would better suit your needs. Self-learning thermostats learn from patterns; making them solely ideal for households with regular patterns.
